A 22-year-old unemployed man who was found in possession of cannabis following a search of his rented house, was convicted and fined at Ballina District Court on Tuesday.

During a search of a flat in Aaran Place, Ballina, in January 2012, gardaí discovered digital weighing scales, empty dealing bags, and cannabis worth €37. A man from Bonniconlon admitted that the cannabis was his and for his own personal use.

Bonniconlon man John O’Hara was formally ratified as a member of Mayo County Council on Monday morning when his co-option to the council to fill the seat left vacant by Dep Michelle Mulherin’s election to the Dáil was passed in the chamber. O’Hara, who has been one of the leading organisers of the Bonniconlon Agricultural Show for the past decade, was proposed by Cllr Joe Mellett and seconded by Cllr Eddie Staunton.
